The Institute for the Investigation of the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP) focuses on scientific and technological research for the sustainable use of biodiversity in the Amazon. IIAP strives to improve the quality of life of Amazonian society through investigation that supports sustainable development and the conservation of natural resources. IIAP is working with NCI to help create regional conservation areas in lowland Amazon forests, and has also opened an office with NCI to implement conservation in the Amazonas Region of Peru.
Government of Loreto, Peru
NCI worked with the regional government and local institutions to create a conservation system for Loreto, Peru’s largest region with 90 million acres of Amazon forests, many of which remain untouched. Together with the Regional Government and the Institute for Investigation of the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP), we developed a strategy of productive conservation, in which local populations are trained to better manage and conserve their natural resources
Government of Ucayali, Peru
Using the successful Regional System of Conservation Areas (PROCREL) program in the Loreto as a model, NCI and the Institute for Investigation of the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP) together with local communities and governments are helping to repeat these conservation achievements in the Ucayali region of Peru.
Government of Amazonas, Peru
In Amazonas, NCI is working together with local governments and organizations to carry out a number of projects such as the creation of a regional system of conservation areas, the creation of the 17,000 acre Tilacancha Private Conservation Area, which protects the water source for the city of Chachapoyas, the promotion of native Amazon fish farms to increase nutrition, employment, and sustainable income and the creation of a private conservation area to protect a globally unique 25,000 acre palm forest.
Government of Piura, Peru
NCI is focusing on creating and consolidating a Regional System of Protected Areas in the Piura Region with the involvement of local governments and INRENA, the Peruvian park service in order to ensure wildlife ranges increase by enhancing connectivity among the region’s ecosystems.
