Saving Amazon Rainforests
40,000 plant species
400 species of mammals
3,000 species of fish
The Amazon rainforest is home to over 40,000 species
of plants, 400 species of mammals, and 3,000 species of fish. NCI
works to protect this amazing diversity of life. With programs in
the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Amazon, NCI works with communities and
regional governments to establish protected areas and improve sustainable
development opportunities for neighboring communities.
Because
of this vast size, the creation of public parks and protected areas
can be especially effective in the Amazon. Our work with the Regional
Government of Loreto, Peru and other partners has resulted in
the designation of over 4.5 million acres as the Tamshiyaku-Tahuayo
Regional Conservation Area (RCA), the Ampiyacu-Apiyacu RCA, and
the Alto Nanay-Pintuyacu-Chambira RCA. NCI is working to declare
other large reserves in Loreto, and with the local indigenous populations
to declare the one million acre Matses Communal Reserve and the
Maihunas RCA. Our community work in these areas is especially strong,
with initiatives in proper resource management and artisanry.
