NCI Works to Educate Peruvian Children about Bird Conservation during World Bird Month January 2010
Promoting bird conservation through creative and artistic expression
As part of World Bird Month festivities in northern Peru, NCI worked with 18 schools to teach the importance of bird conservation and habitat protection through a number of creative and artistic expression activities. Activities in coastal communities included mural painting, flying kites in the shapes of marine birds common to the area, and a series of art projects to learn about the threats seabirds face such as garbage dumping and oil spills. In the higher elevation areas, children dressed up as regional bird species such as the red-headed parrot and put on a play to talk about the birds’ characteristics, habitats, and the threats they face. Many of the birds endemic to this area are in danger of extinction due to habit destruction caused by logging, pollution, and artisanal oil extraction activities, making these educational festivities of utmost importance. Teachers and parents played an active role in the celebration, with the goal of incorporating these important themes into daily life rather than just this isolated event. NCI has been working in this region since 2006 to promote the conservation of key ecosystems to protect threaten and endangered species.
