Protecting Water Resources in the Peruvian Amazon September/October 2009
Communities have allocated over 50% of their communal land to the Conservation Area
NCI is actively working in the Peruvian Amazon with a number of other institutions to establish the Tilacancha Private Conservation Area that will help protect vital water resources for the city of Chachapoyas as well as preserve the region’s high biodiversity. As part of the technical process, NCI conducted a number of essential studies analyzing water supply and quality in the area. Additionally, more than 500 surveys were given to determine the residents’ willingness to pay for supply and quality improvements through watershed conservation, with the aim of designing and implementing payment mechanisms for environmental services. The necessary technical documents for the Conservation Area’s establishment have already been submitted to the Peruvian Environmental Ministry for approval, and local support for the project is high. Rural communities have already allocated over 50% of their communal land to the Conservation Area so as to ensure the environmental goods and services that provide for sustainable development are protected at the community, district and regional levels.
