US Institutions Forming Partnerships
with NCI May/June 2009
Expanding reserach
activities in NCI's reserves and generating income for conservation
Through the formation of partnerships with several
US institutions and organizations, NCI will be able to expand research
activities in its private reserves. During a recent visit by staff
members from the San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation
Research, the researchers took note of the great importance
of NCI’s recent conservation purchases in the tropical deciduous
forests of southwestern Ecuador and are planning on beginning a
research program within the private reserve to study the flora and
fauna of this highly threatened ecosystem. Researchers will be returning
in upcoming months to begin a quantitative assessment of the mammals,
reptiles, birds and flora present within the reserve. Science faculty
from the University of Western Kentucky also met with NCI staff
in Ecuador recently to explore research and work opportunities for
its students within NCI’s private reserves. This new potential
relationship will be formalized over the next several months. Income
from the use of its private reserves for research activities will
supply NCI with additional funds for future conservation efforts.
