Second Cazaderos Purchase Protects
Critical Tropical Forest May/June 2009
2,700 additional acres
in an unspoiled section of tropical deciduous forest
NCI has purchased an additional 2,700 acres in
the Cazaderos section of southwestern Ecuador in an unspoiled section
of tropical deciduous forest – a
highly endangered ecosystem type of which only 5% currently remains.
The acquisition is located in the largest continuous block of tropical
deciduous forest in the region, and forms a critical forest corridor
between NCI’s La Ceiba Reserve and the Biosphere Reserve of
Northwestern Peru. This purchase adds to a 2,300 acre prop-erty
that NCI acquired in the Cazaderos region earlier this year. The
Mantled Howler Monkey, Peccary, and Boa constrictor, in addition
to dear, pumas and many of the most threatened bird species of the
region can all be found here.
