German Ambassador Visits NCI
February 2009
This
February, Christian Berger, the German Ambassador to Ecuador, visited
NCI’s San Francisco Scientific Station in southern Ecuador
to learn about some of the cutting-edge projects taking place in
this extremely biodiverse tropical mountain forest ecosystem. The
German Research Foundation (DFG) has been working at the Scientific
Station for over 10 years, and together with other international
and Ecuadorian researchers has produced a number of invaluable peer
reviewed publications providing useful information for local farmers
and communities, government officials, and policy makers regarding
conservation and development. The DFG program is the world’s
largest in this type of ecosystem. The Ambassador was particularly
impressed by the enthusiasm of researchers, the quality and variety
of the current projects, the outstanding diversity of vegetation
in the region and, as an orchid enthusiast, their species richness
and the impressive bounty of colors, shapes and sizes. To conclude
his visit, Mr. Berger met with staff at NCI’s headquarters
in Loja, Ecuador to learn more about the collaborative activities
taking place between NCI, the DFG and local universities in an effort
to most effectively manage the region’s vulnerable ecosystems
and to ensure a better livelihood for local populations.
